Missed JLPT December 2026 Registration? Your Plan B

You didn't fail Japanese. You missed a form.

JLPT registration doesn't behave like a normal exam signup. Seats are finite. Hosts close early. And this December cycle, Japan filled in days. The Japan Times reported on September 4, 2026 that December slots in Japan filled within days after applications opened on August 24.

If you stared at a "0 seats available" screen and felt your stomach drop: that's the form, not your Japanese. Here's Plan B. No shame, no invented pass rates, no "just walk in on the day."

The sitting is still Sunday, December 6, 2026, per the official JLPT FAQ. Whether you can sit it is a host-and-eligibility question, not a calendar question.

On that Japan Times visa line, read this twice. Japan Times reports tightening language expectations for some visa applications and renewals. That's news reporting, not Immigration guidance — this article will not invent visa categories or required N-levels. If a certificate is part of your case: verify with Immigration, your sponsor, or official guidance for that case. Nothing below is a visa outcome, a renewal path, or a score guarantee.

Stop refreshing. Sort three things first.

Date. Host. Eligibility. Mix them up and you burn another weekend on the wrong page.

December 6, 2026 is the sitting. July 5, 2026 already happened.

Hosts are messier. Overseas registration isn't one portal — your friend's city isn't yours. Start at the overseas test-site list, then open your host's page and read live capacity, not last week's screenshot.

If Japan was the plan, ask before you hunt seats: were you even eligible? The 2026 domestic exam isn't a tourist exam. JEES is explicit for 2026: Residence Card number and expiry at application. No card at that moment — tourism / short-stay under three months included — and you cannot apply. A planned trip later doesn't count.

If you don't hold a Residence Card, "I missed Japan registration" is the wrong diagnosis. You weren't in that queue. Look overseas, or lock the next sitting you can actually sit. A published end date isn't a promise of remaining seats.

If you're deciding right now

If you don't have a Residence Card (and didn't at application time): stop refreshing MyJLPT for Japan. Overseas list. Japan 2026 domestic was never your door.

If you do have a Residence Card: MyJLPT for Dec 2026 ended September 7; seats filled days after the August 24 open. Treat Japan as locked this cycle unless JEES pages say otherwise since this verification.

If you're in the US: as of September 12, 2026, AATJ said most sites/levels were sold out. SA deadline (Sep 4) is past. Late registration and waitlists are not available. December-only locally — no local July.

If a nearby city or another country is still accepting, you meet that host's rules, and you can get there: Option A. Everything else is Option B + C.

Stop here if you're still hoping for a waitlist or day-of spare seat at a host that already said no. That hope costs weeks.

Doors that are already shut (at major hosts)

Skip this and you lose another month.

Late registration / waitlists? Generally not. AATJ: "Late Registration and Waitlists are not available due to high demand." JF Sydney: no late applications, no waiting list, no standby.

Walk-in on December 6 because someone no-showed? AATJ won't take on-site registration, even if a seat sits empty. Don't fly in hoping.

Already paid in the US and want a different level or city? AATJ: order is final at payment — no refunds or transfers.

Hoping to "just take July in the US"? AATJ: US is December-only. No local July sitting.

Host policies, not a global JLPT law. Your city may differ — verify — but don't plan on a waitlist a host already said they don't keep.

Open the overseas list and your local host page today — not "when you have time." Wanted Japan? Confirm Residence Card eligibility for 2026 before you keep hunting a Japan seat.

Drop late registration, waitlists, and day-of spare chairs. If a nearby city or another country is still accepting, and you meet that host's rules, and you can get there: Option A. Locked out? Next sitting is the target (Option B); a dated study block starts today (Option C).

Write the outcome down. Then stop refreshing.

Option A — Still sit December 6, 2026

Only if a host is still taking applications and has capacity. Japan's MyJLPT window closed September 7 (see the table). As of this verification, AATJ said most US sites/levels were sold out — even while general notes still mentioned September 16 — and the SA deadline (September 4) is past.

Local examples (those hosts only, not universal):

Australia (JF Sydney). Published Dec window: August 28, 9am – September 10, 5pm AEST, or until capacity. Host page said applications had closed. (JF Sydney)

Philippines (JF Manila). August 25, 10am – September 7, 11:59pm; may close early if numbers get too large. (JF Manila)

Another city might still be open — that's the whole of Option A. Check the overseas list. Confirm that host's eligibility (some rules are not Japan's Residence Card rule), plus travel and live capacity. Last week's screenshot doesn't count.

Find a real open seat and you qualify? Register — then start Option C anyway. Sitting December unprepared is an expensive way to learn you needed the gap plan.

Option B — Lock the next sitting

Typically July and December. The official FAQ lists 2026 as Sunday, July 5 and Sunday, December 6. Outside Japan, some cities offer only one of those months — check the overseas list for yours.

Do not treat any 2027 date in a blog (including this one) as official. As of September 12, 2026, exact 2027 dates weren't on the FAQ we verified. Until jlpt.jp / JEES publish them: typically July and December.

If you're in a July + December city: missing Dec 2026 registration usually means your next local shot is the following July. Japan's 2026 July window ran March 17 – April 7, 17:00 — a 2026 pattern, not a 2027 promise (JEES July 2026 guide). Reminder for late winter / early spring: host page first, then mid-summer.

If you're in a December-only city (United States, per AATJ): no local July. Don't tell yourself you'll "just take July in the US." AATJ notes you may travel to a July country — travel plus that host's rules. Locked out of US Dec 2026? Honest local target is typically the next December.

Set the reminder now. Host pages, not social media. Windows close early.

Option C — Use the gap (editorial study block)

A VoiGu recovery calendar — not an official JLPT curriculum. Organizers don't publish a "you missed registration, do this" syllabus. Use their level summaries and the Official Practice Workbooks they point to. How we'd spend the wait: N5/N4/N3 in some depth, N2/N1 lighter.

From jlpt.jp, condensed: N5 — some basic Japanese (hiragana, katakana, basic kanji; short, slow daily/classroom listening). N4 — basic Japanese; familiar daily passages; daily conversation if spoken slowly. N3 — everyday Japanese to a certain degree (everyday writing, headline-level news, near-natural everyday listening); the jump people underestimate. N2 / N1 — broader real-life Japanese, up to complex/abstract reading and natural-speed listening.

You pass only if you take every required section and clear both the overall pass mark and every sectional minimum. Miss a section, or dip one under the floor, and you fail even with a high total (FAQ). Cramming vocab while skipping 聴解 isn't a Plan B.

If December 6 happens without you, treat it as a diagnostic holiday — sit a timed mock that morning anyway. You'll know what the next sitting feels like.

JLPT will not test speaking. Life still will.

Does the JLPT include a conversation or composition test? Official answer: no, neither is currently included. A CEFR reference on score reports didn't add speaking or writing sections.

If someone says they "passed JLPT speaking," they didn't. There isn't one.

Spoken Japanese still isn't optional. Interviews, a shop, a group chat, week one in an office — none of those are four-choice マークシート. Practice talking and the exam sections. Not instead of them.

Gu won't get you a JLPT speaking score — there isn't one to get — and VoiGu isn't a hidden 読解 or 聴解 course. Five minutes out loud between reviews (commute, self-intro, "what happened today") is the job. FAQ

Can I transfer this registration to the next sitting?
In the US, AATJ says no: you cannot cancel, transfer your seat, or reschedule. Other hosts set their own rules — ask that host. Do not assume a transfer exists.

Can I walk in on December 6 if someone no-shows?
AATJ: no on-site registration, even if a seat is empty. JF Sydney: no standby. Don't fly in hoping.

Can I take the July JLPT in the United States?
No. AATJ: the US offers the test only in December. July exists in other countries; that's travel plus that host's rules, not a US date.

I'm visiting Japan as a tourist. Can I sit the 2026 Japan JLPT?
No. JEES: if you do not have a Residence Card at application time, you cannot apply. Short-stay / tourism / a stay under three months: not eligible. Even a planned trip to Japan later does not make you eligible.

Are US seats still available for December 6, 2026?
As of September 12, 2026, AATJ said most sites and levels were sold out. Check their registration page if you want a last look. Don't count on a late opening. Late registration and waitlists are not available.

When is the next JLPT after December 6, 2026?
Typically July and December. Exact 2027 dates were not on the official FAQ as of this verification. Watch jlpt.jp and your host. Some cities are December-only.

Does practicing with Gu replace JLPT prep?
