Politeness under load: Sie default (and when du shows up)
With strangers, staff, and hotel desks: default to Sie. Können Sie…? Was empfehlen Sie? Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Du shows up with friends, peers, hostel vibes, and people who invite it — sometimes with Duzen wir? or a switch in their reply. When someone switches to du, follow. Until then, Sie is the honest travel default. You need one spoken Sie repair line (Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?), not a social curriculum — then stay in German one more turn before the English hatch.
Sound tips in situ (qualitative)
- Bahnhof — long Bahn-; don’t chop into English “ban-hoff.”
- ich / auch — front ch (ich) vs back ch (auch); don’t English-ise both to “sh” or “k.”
- Rounded vowels — möchte, schön, Frühstück; café and breakfast lines are your gym.
- Question front — Wo ist der Bahnhof? Verb early; full pattern, not tiles.

How many German travel phrases do I actually need?

Should I use Sie or du when traveling?
Default to Sie with strangers and staff. Follow du when invited. One Sie repair line beats a social curriculum.
What if I freeze at the counter?
