Why Arabic trips beginners up

Everyday Arabic, right-to-left script, and أنت versus أنتم.

What trips beginners up in Arabic — and how you practice it out loud. Early lessons use everyday MSA/فصحى-leaning forms like مرحبا, السلام عليكم and اسمي…

  • Everyday MSA/فصحى-leaning Arabic

Early spoken greetings (مرحبا, السلام عليكم, صباح الخير) are MSA / Modern Standard–leaning everyday Arabic in one standard course.

  • Arabic script reads right-to-left

Free early targets (مرحبا, السلام عليكم, اسمي, تشرفنا) use Arabic script, written right-to-left. Silent left-to-right flashcard apps hide that direction. Voice practice makes you say the full script line aloud.

  • أنت / أنتم is the address gear — not حضرتك

Lessons use أنت (you) by default; plural أنتم comes later. Silent tiles skip the register choice and the full greeting breath (السلام عليكم as the most formal hello).

How Gu helps here

Say it out loud, then try it again.

Say an Arabic line out loud, and try it again.

  1. 01

    Say, retry

Practise a useful Arabic line in a short speaking loop tied to the MSA/فصحى-lean greeting breath in مرحبا / السلام عليكم, the full Arabic-script line before alphabet depth, or أنت address in name and origin asks.

  2. 02

    Real beginner situations

Greetings, introductions, and polite please, thank-you, and sorry are practised out loud, not only as silent tiles. Café قهوة, the station, the bathroom, repair lines, numbers, and alphabet literacy come later in the course.

  3. 03

    Protect tomorrow’s five minutes

Use the daily-habit guidance linked on this page so the next five-minute session still happens.

A first-week path

Six speaking scenes — not a fluency promise.

Voice-first scenarios, not a time-to-fluency promise. Free week one is units 1–2 only: greetings and introducing yourself, starting with مرحبا and أهلا وسهلا. السلام عليكم is the most formal greeting. Café, the station, the bathroom, repair, numbers, and alphabet literacy come later in the course.

  1. 01

صباح الخير. مساء الخير. Soft replies صباح النور and مساء النور too. In the free early lessons.

  3. 03

    Close the exchange

  4. 04

    Polite cluster

  5. 05

    Introduce yourself

اسمي ___. أنا ___. تشرفنا. For example: اسمي سارة, أنا طالب. In the free early lessons.

Who it’s for

Three people who open Arabic to speak.

  • English-speaking beginners

You want MSA/فصحى-leaning greetings, name lines, and polite من فضلك / شكرا phrases you can say aloud in week one — without waiting for an alphabet literacy course.

  • Returning learners

You recognise Arabic letters or dialect media but hesitate over the MSA greeting breath, right-to-left script direction, and أنت address when speaking.

  • Travellers and culture-curious learners

You want a small daily voice habit for hellos, introductions, and soft please, thank-you, and sorry — not a silent conjugations marathon. Café قهوة, station and bathroom asks, exact repair, numbers, and alphabet depth arrive later in the structured path.

Arabic questions

Straight answers.

Do I need to master every Arabic sound (or diglossia) before speaking?

No. Start with useful complete phrases (مرحبا, السلام عليكم, اسمي…, من فضلك, شكرا). Rhythm and register become clearer through spoken practice; we do not promise pronunciation mastery in a fixed number of weeks. Alphabet / حروف literacy comes later in the course, not in the free early lessons.

Does VoiGu teach Egyptian Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Gulf Arabic, or MSA?

The Arabic path is standard beginner Arabic, and early lessons use everyday MSA / فصحى-leaning forms (e.g. مرحبا, السلام عليكم, اسمي…). There are no separate Egyptian, Levantine or Gulf versions.

Can I practise Arabic pronunciation as a beginner?

Yes — use the voice-first practice loop and the page’s sound and structure examples (MSA greeting breath, right-to-left script direction, أنت address). Say the line out loud, then try it again. The free early lessons cover greetings and introducing yourself; the alphabet comes later. Arabic script is written right-to-left.

Are the first Arabic units free?

The first two units are free. They cover greetings and introducing yourself. Plus unlocks content beyond the first two free units; see /pricing. Start via /get-app.
