German Travel Phrases You Can Say Out Loud
German travel phrases to say out loud for trains, hotels, directions, cafés, and calm repair.

Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof?
Say it. Out loud. Not as a silent highlight on a PDF — as a full question your mouth can find when the platform is loud, the board is scrolling, and your brain is tired.
Packing for a German-speaking trip is not packing 200 flashcards you never voice. The list looked perfect on the plane; at the gate, the words scatter. This page is a set of travel scenes — airport and train, hotel, directions, café, calm repair — each built to be spoken, then drilled once under tiny pressure.

How to use this page (read → say aloud → Say it with Gu)
- Read the German once with the English gloss
- Say aloud the full line — rounded vowels, volume up
- Say it with Gu — same scene as a short loop so retrieval sticks
One scene per session is enough. A few sayable lines beat every table before the trip.
Brand-new? Our German for beginners guide (Day 1–7 lines) covers week one; don’t wait on it for today’s Bahnhof ask. Habit: building a daily language habit. This post stays on travel scenes you can say.

If the board just flipped: Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof? Say it twice — once soft, once over a PA.

Café and restaurant: if you blank at the counter
Full sentence with the article ending inside — not a noun flashcard.
Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte. Stretch with mit Milch or ein Wasser. Blank? Langsamer, bitte, then restart. Das hier, bitte + a point is allowed.
| Moment | Say aloud (DE) | EN gloss | Retry tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Table / I’d like | Einen Tisch für zwei, bitte. / Ich möchte…, bitte. | A table for two. / I’d like… | Keep möchte + noun + bitte |

Say it out loud with Gu: Order with einen inside → ohne Zucker → price → die Rechnung. No English mid-order.
Emergency and repair — calm lines, clear asks
Practical help. Stack facts. Skip drama.
| Situation | Say aloud (DE) | EN gloss | Retry tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft open / help | Entschuldigung… / Ich brauche Hilfe. | Excuse me… / I need help. | Calm volume |

| Sick / lost | Mir ist schlecht. / Ich habe mich verlaufen. | I feel unwell. / I’ve gotten lost. | Then ask hotel / Bahnhof |
| Lost passport / phone / police | Ich habe meinen Pass / mein Handy verloren. / Wo ist die Polizei? | I’ve lost my passport / phone. / Where is the police? | Stack the object |
| English hatch / repeat | Sprechen Sie Englisch? / Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? | Do you speak English? / Could you please repeat that? | Hatch after you try German |
Real trouble → local emergency numbers and human help first. Drills support talk; they do not replace care.
Say it out loud with Gu: Pharmacy → Mir ist schlecht → Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? Clear facts.
Politeness under load: Sie default (and when du shows up)
With strangers, staff, and hotel desks: default to Sie. Können Sie…? Was empfehlen Sie? Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Du shows up with friends, peers, hostel vibes, and people who invite it — sometimes with Duzen wir? or a switch in their reply. When someone switches to du, follow. Until then, Sie is the honest travel default. You need one spoken Sie repair line (Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?), not a social curriculum — then stay in German one more turn before the English hatch.
Sound tips in the moment
- Bahnhof — long Bahn-; don’t chop into English “ban-hoff.”
- ich / auch — front ch (ich) vs back ch (auch); don’t English-ise both to “sh” or “k.”
- Rounded vowels — möchte, schön, Frühstück; café and breakfast lines are your gym.
- Question front — Wo ist der Bahnhof? Verb early; full pattern, not tiles.
Our German beginners guide goes deeper on the basics. For now: say the lines, notice the sound, retry once.
A 5-minute travel drill (pick 3 → say → hear → retry once)
Five minutes is a container, not a “trip-ready” clock.
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–1 | Warm-up: Entschuldigung. Wo ist die Toilette? Danke. |
| 1–3 | Pick three lines from one scene only |
| 3–4 | Hear each line, then yourself: same three again |
| 4–5 | Retry once — louder; fix one sound (ü, ch, or Bahnhof) |
One scene per day. Full sentences. Miss a day → restart. Add the repair line so blanking has a plan. Habit: building a daily language habit.
Say it out loud with Gu. Five minutes. Three lines. One retry. Done.

Gu is the friend in your pocket for practice: in Speak lessons you say the Bahnhof ask out loud, then try it again. Short loop. On trip days — jet lag, early trains, café counters — no streak shame. Protect five calm minutes when you can; skip without drama when you can’t.

FAQ
How many German travel phrases do I actually need?
Fewer than the PDF promised. A Bahnhof ask, a café order with einen inside, a hotel line, a directions frame, and one repair cover more real days than a hundred unread rows.
Should I use Sie or du when traveling?
Default to Sie with strangers and staff. Follow du when invited. One Sie repair line beats a social curriculum.
What if I freeze at the counter?
Langsamer, bitte. Then restart Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte. Pointing plus Das hier, bitte is allowed.
Can I practice these on a plane?
Yes — whisper them, no app needed. Lists alone aren’t retrieval, so say them out loud again once you land.
Is VoiGu free for German?
Yes. You can start free. Plus unlocks more — /pricing. Practice German travel lines free · App Store / get-app. The first two units are free. On iPhone and Android.
Do I need Goethe A1 before I travel?
No. Formal exam paths are useful later for some. Spoken travel lines and a calm repair matter more on trip week than an exam calendar.
Pack three lines — then drill the next scene
Travel German sticks when it is scenario-first and spoken. Open with Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof? or Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte. Drill the scene you need next.
