What makes Japanese feel huge

Scripts, particles, polite dialogue — in that spoken order.

Japanese isn’t Spanish with a different flag. The work is sound, then the marks on the page, then the little words that steer the sentence.

  • Three scripts, one spoken language

Hiragana carries grammar you hear. Katakana flags loanwords. Kanji marks meaning. You start by saying the line; the scripts show up as support, not a wall you have to climb first.

  • Particles as the sentence’s joints

は, が, を, に tell you what the sentence is doing. You learn them inside a spoken request — コーヒーをください — not as a detached particle chart.

  • Polite lines you’ll actually hear

です / ます, お願いします, すみません. Everyday polite dialogue you’ll actually hear.

How Gu practices with you

Say お願いします before you can write it perfectly.

Japanese on VoiGu is voice-first: a short polite turn, said out loud, then seen in script. No silent kanji grind as the main event.

  1. 01

    The mouth, then the page

You say こんにちは and ありがとうございます first. Hiragana follows the sounds you already practiced — so reading is a reminder, not a gate.

  2. 02

A counter, not a classroom speech

これ、お願いします. すみません. Small service-counter turns you can reuse. The lesson stays in one scene long enough to retry.

  3. 03

    Particles in the line

When は and を show up, they show up inside the sentence you’re speaking. We name them. We don’t pause the path for a linguistics unit.

A first-week map

Four Japanese turns to practice — not a fluency promise.

A path for week one, not a claim about what you will master. We will not tell you you’ll be conversational on a calendar.

  1. 01

    A greeting and a thank-you

こんにちは. ありがとうございます. Two complete turns. Say them until they feel like yours, not like romanization.

  2. 02

    A counter order

これ、お願いします. Point, ask politely, finish the request. を is doing work you can hear.

  3. 03

    Get someone’s attention

すみません. One word that opens a question, a correction, or a “excuse me” in a shop — practiced out loud.

  4. 04

    A simple okay

大丈夫です. A calm reply you can actually use. The lesson ends on a complete exchange, not a new kanji list.

A first-week speaking map — not a promise. Scripts and particles come along with the lines, not as a separate exam.

Particles in one breath

は, を, に — used inside a real line.

A pocket cue for the joints of a Japanese sentence.

は, を, に — used inside a real line.
ParticleIn a spoken lineWhat it marks
はこれはお茶です。The topic you’re talking about
をコーヒーをください。The thing you’re asking for
に東京に行きます。Direction or destination
Who this is for

Three reasons people open Japanese on VoiGu.

  • A first week in the city

Counter orders, “excuse me,” and thank-yous you can say at a station kiosk — before you can read every sign.

  • Now say the polite version

Anime, games, or songs got you in the door. Lessons start with everyday です / ます lines you can use with a stranger.

  • Meeting people, not passing a kanji test

Host-family greetings and workplace hellos. Speak the polite turn first. Kanji can wait its place in the same phrase.

Japanese questions

Straight answers. Nothing we can’t stand behind.

Do I have to learn kanji before I speak?

No. You start by speaking. Scripts show up as you need them — hiragana for the grammar you hear, katakana for loanwords, kanji as meaning markers, not a wall.

Is there a keigo track?

Lessons include polite everyday dialogue (です / ます, お願いします).

Will I be conversational in three months?

We don’t set a fluency date. Week one is greetings, a counter order, and すみません — a path to practice, not a guarantee.

Particles feel impossible. Where do I start?

Inside a spoken sentence: これは / をください / に行きます. You learn the joint with the line, not as a chart you have to finish first.
